Plain Tiles

Plain roof tiles are a traditional feature of British buildings, available in both clay and concrete. Their small format creates the familiar overlapping pattern seen on cottages, period houses and many newer properties. They are laid with a double lap, meaning each tile overlaps the two courses below.

Clay plain tiles include handmade and machine-made varieties, with finishes ranging from smooth surfaces to textured, rustic designs. Earlier handmade tiles were often hung using wooden pegs, while nibbed tiles became common with mass production from the Victorian period onwards. Variations in colour, texture and dimensions contribute to the distinctive character of older roofs.

Concrete plain tiles offer a choice of colours and finishes with a more uniform appearance. Suitable plain tiles can also be used for details such as dormers, curved roof features and vertical tile hanging.
