Keymer Tiles is one of Britain’s oldest names in clay roof tile manufacturing, with a history dating back to 1588. Originally associated with the clay-working industry around Keymer and Ditchling in Sussex, the company developed a strong reputation for producing high-quality handmade clay tiles using locally sourced Wealden clay.
Keymer tiles are particularly well known for their traditional handmade appearance, with natural variations in colour, texture and shape giving each tile its own character. The rich red and warm earthy tones of the clay make Keymer tiles especially popular for traditional properties, period homes, conservation work and roof repairs where an authentic appearance is important.
During the 1970s, Keymer made the decision to concentrate on handmade clay roofing tiles rather than brick manufacture. This coincided with a growing interest in the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, helping to establish Keymer as a specialist manufacturer of premium handmade roof tiles.
Today, Keymer is owned by Wienerberger and production is based at Ewhurst in Surrey. Despite the move from its historic Sussex works, the company continues to manufacture handmade clay roof tiles using traditional skills and techniques, alongside modern production technology. Keymer tiles are used on everything from traditional cottages to listed and historically important buildings throughout the UK.
Keymer roof tiles are a genuine piece of British roofing history, combining traditional craftsmanship with the durability and character of handmade clay.
