Essex and Sussex peg tiles form part of the South East’s long tradition of handmade clay roofing. Unlike nibbed tiles, traditional peg tiles have holes near the top through which wooden pegs were inserted to hang them from roof laths.

Their dimensions, thickness, colour and curvature vary between makers and batches, giving older roofs their distinctive character. Many examples are larger than traditional Kent peg tiles, although regional names do not indicate a single standard size.

Our reclaimed Essex and Sussex peg tiles offer naturally weathered finishes for period properties, repairs and extensions where a suitable match is needed. Available sizes range from approximately 10 × 6 inches to 11 × 7 inches, subject to stock.
