Kent peg tiles are a distinctive feature of the county’s traditional buildings, with a history rooted in medieval tile-making. Used for centuries on cottages, churches and other buildings, their handmade shapes and varied colours contribute to the character of Kent’s roofs.
They take their name from the wooden pegs traditionally inserted through holes near the top of each tile to hang them from roof laths. Appropriate modern fixings are also used today, depending on the roof’s construction and conservation requirements.
Traditional Kent peg tiles vary in size and are generally smaller than many other regional peg tiles. Differences in camber, thickness and surface texture give each roof an individual appearance.
Our reclaimed Kent peg tiles offer naturally weathered character for repairs, restoration and extensions where matching an existing roof is important. Sizes and colours vary between batches.
