Machine-made clay plain tiles combine a traditional roof appearance with a more regular shape and finish than handmade tiles. Well-known ranges include Acme, Rosemary and Dreadnought, with smooth and sand-faced options offering different surface textures.
Colours extend beyond terracotta and plum to include reds, browns, blues and brindled blends, depending on the manufacturer and range. A smooth finish does not necessarily mean the tile is glazed; some manufacturers achieve their colours through the firing process without an applied coating.
Many standard tiles measure approximately 265 × 165mm, commonly described as 10½ × 6½ inches. Larger 11 × 7-inch tiles are also found in some ranges and reclaimed stock.
