Welsh natural slate has been used for roofing for centuries and became widely exported during the Industrial Revolution, covering homes, factories, churches and public buildings across Britain and overseas. It remains a distinctive part of our architectural heritage.
Quarried in North Wales, well-known varieties include Penrhyn, Ffestiniog and Cwt-y-Bugail. Penrhyn is associated with heather-blue and purple tones, while Ffestiniog and Cwt-y-Bugail offer blue-grey and darker blue-grey colouring respectively. Each has its own natural texture and appearance.
Good-quality Welsh slate can be split into thin sheets while retaining its strength and is valued for its durability and weather resistance. It complements both traditional properties and contemporary buildings.
Carefully selected reclaimed Welsh slates offer an established appearance for roof repairs, extensions and restoration projects. Matching their type, dimensions, thickness and colour helps maintain the character of an existing roof, while reusing sound slates gives these traditional materials a new purpose.
